HOW MANY WORDS DOES POCKETTRAN HAVE?

Depending on the language pair PocketTran has between 30,000 and 200.000 words (entries) on both sides of the dictionary. It has between 120,000 and 800,000 translations depending on the language pair.

If you wish to translate a word, phrase, text, SMS message, e-mail, web page or something similar you need to highlight the text, and then Edit->Copy, open PocketTran and then Edit->Paste.

New words and phrases can be added, in an unlimited number which is especially interesting for users that wish to translate technical texts. By adding your own translations you can achieve a significantly higher translation accuracy.


HOW TO USE POCKETTRAN FOR COMMUNICATING WITH A PERSON WHO DOES NOT SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE NOR DO YOU SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE?

Task: You wish to tell the other person something

Step 1: You enter what you want to tell the other person in the Source... textbox. We recommend learning how to use Graffiti.

Step 2: You give the other person your iPaq/Jornada/Pocket PC/etc. machine and show them how to select alternative translations by using the stylus.


Task: The other person wishes to tell you something

Step 1: You need to show the other person how to use the keyboard. Teaching them how to use Graffiti will be too cumbersome and slow.

Step 2: The other person should enter what they want to tell you in the Source... textbox. We recommend that you just quickly show them how to use the keyboard input method because learning to use Graffiti will take more than a few minutes of your time.

Step 3: The other person gives your iPaq/Jornada/Pocket PC/etc. machine back to you and your select alternative translations by using the stylus.

The method described above is sufficient to enable communication between two people who do not speak the same language to communicate. The only hard part (if one can call it hard) to how quickly can you teach the other person with a show-and-do method. However this can be done by showing the other person by a few examples and this in our experiments takes up to 1 minute to accomplish if one opts for teaching the other person only the keyboard input methodology.

A valuable feature of PocketTran is that is constantly tracks the translations you choose and in this way constantly learns from you. The number of learned translation choices as well as the number of newly added words is limited only by the amount of free memory in your PocketTran machine.

COMPATIBILITY

PocketTran is 100% compatible with Windows CE, Pocket PC, Pocket PC 2002 and Windows Mobile 2003 (e.g. Compaq iPaq, HP Jornada, Pocket PC, etc.). It can be used on any iPaq, Jornada or Pocket PC machine with at least 8 MB. PocketTran can be bought alone or with HP Jornada with 64 MB.


LICENSE NUMBER

Because of piracy protection (in many countries over 80%) during the first run of PocketTran, the program will ask you for a license number. In order to receive your license number, you will have to send us the reference number shown in a grayed textbox on your screen. The reference number will have 9 digits and will begin the letter P. Please send us your reference number via e-mail to: Internet@tranexp.com. Without the reference number we will be unable to send you your unique license number.


ENTERING DATA FROM PAPER INTO YOUR COMPUTER

In order to enter data from paper into your computer, you first have to scan the text. Scanning text is done using a scanner, a machine that transfers text from the paper into the computer in the form of an image. Special software called OCR (optical character recognition) software transforms the scanned image into electronic text. OCR software usually comes together with the scanner when you buy it. For recognising English letters such pre-packaged OCR software is sufficient, but for recognising non-English characters you will need better software.


PROFESSIONAL TRANSLATORS

The biggest advantage for professional translators is that they can cut down the time required to perform the translation of any document. Instead of carrying a heavy dictionary around all one needs is a handheld device that contains all the translations that will be needed from time to time.

PocketTran offer a number of alternative translations so that the human translator does not need to look at specialised dictionaries for an appropriate translation.

The other advantage for professional translators is that they can optimise the software for their needs so that they can enter their preferred translations which the program will memorise and offer at the top of the list of alternative translations during every subsequent translation session.

If you have a list of translations in any specialised area, e.g. 500 or 1000, you can send these to us so that we can optimise our translation software. The package which includes optimisation of the software is called PocketTran Professional. SIZE

Machines for PocketTran are the size of two mobile/cell telephone put side by side, i.e. the size of a pocket calculator. Its screen is 8 cm (height) x 6 cm (width) and the whole machine is 127 mm (height) x 76 mm (width) x 16 mm (thickness).
